Numerology has one clear advantage over astrology as a starting point: you can do the arithmetic yourself, in about two minutes, with nothing but your date of birth and a pen.
This article shows you how to calculate your Life Path number, what the Vedic tradition associates with each of the nine numbers, and — importantly — where the limits of a single number lie.
How to calculate your Life Path number
Write out your full date of birth and add every digit together, then keep reducing until you reach a single digit.
Worked example. Take 14 August 1992.
Day: 1 + 4 = 5. Month: 8. Year: 1 + 9 + 9 + 2 = 21, and 2 + 1 = 3.
Now add those three results: 5 + 8 + 3 = 16. Reduce again: 1 + 6 = 7.
The Life Path number for that date is 7.
Try it with your own date now, before reading on. It is more interesting when you have your number in front of you.
Why Vedic numerology differs from the Western system
Here is the part most articles leave out. In Vedic numerology each number is assigned to a graha — a planet — which ties the whole system directly into Jyotish.
That connection is what gives the numbers their meaning. They are not arbitrary. A number described as disciplined and slow-moving is described that way because it belongs to Saturn.
The nine numbers and their grahas
1 — Sun. Leadership, authority, independence, a tendency to want to do it alone. Comfortable at the front, less comfortable taking instruction.
2 — Moon. Sensitivity, receptivity, care for others. Strong intuition, changeable moods, works well in partnership.
3 — Jupiter. Expansion, teaching, optimism, breadth of interest. Often drawn to learning and to explaining things to others.
4 — Rahu. Unconventional, restless, drawn to the new and the disruptive. Original, sometimes at odds with convention.
5 — Mercury. Communication, adaptability, commerce, quick thinking. Rarely still, frequently persuasive.
6 — Venus. Beauty, relationship, comfort, the arts. Draws people in, values harmony, dislikes conflict.
7 — Ketu. Enquiry, detachment, the inward turn. Comfortable alone, drawn to what lies beneath the surface.
8 — Saturn. Discipline, endurance, delayed reward, structure. Progress tends to be slow and then substantial.
9 — Mars. Energy, courage, drive, appetite for a fight worth having. Direct, sometimes to a fault.
The other numbers worth knowing
The Life Path is the best known, but it is one of several.
Your Birth number is simply the day of the month you were born, reduced to a single digit. Born on the 23rd? That is 2 + 3 = 5. It is read as the more visible, day-to-day expression of your character.
Your Name number is derived by assigning values to the letters of your name and reducing the total. This is the number people mean when they talk about changing a spelling for numerological reasons.
The three are read together. Where they agree, a trait tends to be pronounced. Where they conflict, the tension itself is usually the interesting part.
What a single number cannot tell you
This is where honesty matters more than mystique.
Roughly one in nine people shares your Life Path number. That is hundreds of millions of people. Any description broad enough to fit all of them is, by definition, not very specific to you.
A Life Path number is a useful starting frame. It is not a personality test, and it is certainly not a prediction. If a numerology reading you find online tells you exactly what will happen in your career this year based on one digit, treat that with the scepticism it deserves.
Where numerology becomes genuinely useful is in combination — Life Path with Birth number with Name number, and ideally read alongside your birth chart, where the same grahas appear with far more detail attached.
On changing your name
Name correction is the most commercially pushed part of numerology, and it deserves a word of caution.
The tradition does hold that a name carries a vibration and that adjusting a spelling can shift it. What the tradition does not hold is that changing your name will fix a difficult chart, guarantee wealth, or substitute for the ordinary work of a life.
Anyone who tells you a spelling change alone will transform your circumstances is selling something. A considered name analysis, done alongside a chart reading and without urgency, is a reasonable thing to seek out.
Where to go next
Calculate your Life Path, your Birth number, and if you are curious, your Name number. Notice where they agree and where they pull against each other. That tension is usually more informative than any single description.
If you would like the numbers read properly and set against your birth chart, our astrologers offer numerology consultations. To learn the calculations and interpretation yourself, our Vedic Numerology course covers the full system.
