The Twelve Houses of a Vedic Chart, Explained Simply

August 11, 2026 · admin

Open any Vedic astrology chart and you will see a diagram divided into twelve sections. Those are the bhavas, or houses, and they are the single most important thing to understand if you want to read a chart rather than have one read to you.

Planets and signs get most of the attention, but the houses are what turn a chart into something about your life rather than abstract symbolism. This article explains what each house governs, how to read one properly, and the mistake almost every beginner makes.

What a house actually represents

A house is an area of life. The twelve of them together are meant to cover the whole of human experience — body, money, siblings, home, children, work, marriage, upheaval, belief, career, gain and loss.

Which sign occupies which house is determined by your ascendant, and the ascendant is determined by your exact time and place of birth. This is why birth time matters so much: change the ascendant and every house shifts.

The twelve houses in brief

First house (Lagna) — the self. Body, temperament, vitality, how you appear to others. The foundation of the chart.

Second house — accumulated wealth, family of origin, speech, food, and what you value.

Third house — courage, effort, younger siblings, short journeys, skill acquired through practice.

Fourth house — home, mother, land and property, education in its early form, and inner contentment.

Fifth house — children, creativity, intelligence, romance, and merit carried from the past.

Sixth house — obstacles, debt, illness, enemies, competition, and daily service. Difficult, but the house of overcoming.

Seventh house — marriage, partnership, business partners, and how you meet others as equals.

Eighth house — upheaval, inheritance, the hidden, research, longevity. The most misunderstood house in the chart.

Ninth house — fortune, belief, teachers, long journeys, father, and higher learning. Traditionally the most auspicious.

Tenth house — career, public standing, authority, and what you are known for.

Eleventh house — gains, income, networks, elder siblings, and fulfilment of desire.

Twelfth house — loss, expenditure, foreign lands, solitude, sleep and release.

How to actually read a house

Here is the part most beginners skip. Reading a house is not a matter of looking at what sits in it. There are four things to check, and they matter in roughly this order.

1. Which sign occupies the house

The sign gives the house its character. A tenth house in Capricorn behaves very differently from a tenth house in Pisces.

2. Where the house lord is placed

This is the step that separates real chart reading from guesswork. Every house is ruled by the planet that owns its sign — and where that planet sits tells you far more than the house itself.

If your tenth house is empty but its lord sits strongly in the ninth, your career is likely tied to teaching, law, or something with a philosophical dimension. An empty house is not an empty area of life. It simply means you read it through its lord.

3. Which planets sit in the house

Occupying planets colour the house directly. Jupiter in the fourth suggests something quite different from Saturn there.

4. What aspects the house

Planets cast aspects across the chart. A house untouched by any planet behaves differently from one under the gaze of three.

The mistake almost everyone makes

Assuming an empty house means nothing happens there.

Most charts have several empty houses — there are only nine grahas for twelve houses, so at least three must be empty. People see an empty seventh and conclude they will never marry, or an empty tenth and worry about their career.

The house is read through its lord. Always. Once that clicks, charts stop looking sparse and start looking connected.

A worked example

Suppose someone has Libra rising. The seventh house is therefore Aries, ruled by Mars. Mars sits in the tenth house in Cancer, where it is debilitated.

A beginner sees an empty seventh house and says nothing about marriage. A trained reader sees that the seventh lord is in the tenth — suggesting partnership connected to career or public life — but debilitated, suggesting the area needs care. Two very different readings from the same chart.

Where to go from here

The twelve houses are the first real threshold in Jyotish. Once you can read a house through its lord, planetary placements start meaning something rather than sitting as isolated facts.

If you want to learn this properly rather than piecemeal, our Foundations of Jyotish course covers the houses, the grahas and a repeatable reading method, with worked example charts.

And if you would rather have your own chart read before studying, our astrologers offer one-to-one consultations.
